Fabric Baby doll baskets are a great gift idea for the little ones in your life.
I made these adorable fabric baby doll baskets last Christmas for the grand-kids. And they are still holding up beautifully a year later.
For Christmas last year my mom decided to gift my 3 year old and 1 year old granddaughters with their own newborn baby dolls. We both got all excited about all the doll “stuff”.
You see, dolls were a way my mom, my daughter, and I bonded years ago. We shared, for a time, an interest in dolls. We collected them and had many fun adventures together visiting doll shops, displaying our dolls, and attending doll shows. (Sadly those opportunities no longer exist.)
So my mom and I were thrilled to introduce a new generation to the love of dolls.
I began searching the internet and Pinterest for doll related accessories. Then I stumbled upon these cute fabric baby doll baskets on several sites. Perfect for the grand-kids! I noticed that they were all sewn from the same pattern. And I searched for more info.
Now I consider my sewing skills to be at the intermediate- beginner level so I was a little hesitant at first. But I decided what the heck, let’s do it!!! So I purchased the pattern.
I used the Baby Doll Basket Pattern by MADE Everyday.
This pattern is a digital download. It includes the pattern for a doll basket in 3 different sizes as well as patterns for a pillow, mattress, and doll blanket. It is very user friendly with detailed step by step directions that were easy to follow. I made the medium size which fits dolls and toys 14″-16″.
So I decided to make a doll basket for all three grand-kids. The fun part was selecting the fabrics and colors that reflected each of the them. I chose to use a flannel fabric for the lining of the baskets, the pillows and the mattresses. Much softer and more cuddly. I used a quilting cotton fabric for the outside of each basket.
The project went together pretty easily for me…until I came to adding the bias tape. Now I admit my skills in working with bias tape aren’t good need some additional practice. It may be different for you though.
My first attempt with the bias tape didn’t go so well. I had to rip it out and try again as I missed catching it in so.many.places! I may or may not have used some colorful words.
That’s why I have this sign posted.
I struggled with the bias tape on all 3 baskets. (This is definitely a sewing skill I need help with!) But I did it! I sewed 3 fabric baby doll baskets!! One for each grandchild!!!! Woo hoo!! So if I can do it, YOU can too!
I made the pillow, mattress and doll blanket reversible.
I chose NOT to use bias tape on the doll blanket. Nope! Was not gonna touch any more bias tape! Instead I simply sewed 2 pieces of fabric with right sides together leaving an opening. Then turned it inside out and top stitched.
I also sewed little tiny baby burp cloths just like I did when the grand-kids were babies. For an easy burp cloth tutorial see this post here.
My grandaughter loves to use hers as a backpack style carrier too. Guess that’s next on my list of things to try sewing.
These DIY fabric baby doll baskets are simply adorable. They are easy to make (hey I did it… 3 times!!). The doll baskets are sturdy and hold up well over time. A wonderful handmade gift for the little one in your life.
And if you choose to make a fabric baby doll basket like these then please come back and share by posting a picture. It’s always fun to see different fabric choices and ideas from others!!
