Throw pillows are such a fabulous way to change up your home decor. Especially for seasonal holidays.
I love me some throw pillows!! Walking down the pillow aisle in home decor stores makes my heart flutter…such pretty colors, designs, and textures. So many choices!! Ahh…
However, the cost can quickly add up. I don’t like to spend a lot of money on holiday pillows that only get used for such a short period of time. But I DO like the seasonal accent and changes they bring to my home decor.
My solution? Make some pillows from a table runner!! Yep, a table runner. Table runners often have beautifully detailed designs on the ends. Which make for great pillows! And they are inexpensive!! You can get a couple of pillows for the fraction of the cost of a single pillow!!
I spotted this adorable Easter bunny table runner at Home Goods one day. The 3 bunnies reminded me of my 3 sweet little grandchildren.
The details were amazing!! The embroidery work…wow!!
And the price was right…only $16.99!!! for a 90″ length table runner. I could sew 2 pillows AND a smaller table runner from this. Sold!!
And tada… here it is… my Easter bunny pillow from a table runner!! So stinking cute!!!
By the way that green lumbar pillow on the sofa was another DIY pillow I made but from throw rugs. You can read about that project here.
After making the pillows I still have a piece left over. Not sure if I’m gonna make a small table runner OR a lumbar pillow. But the extra fabric gives me options. And I was able to do all this for only $16.99!! What a deal!!!!
Last year I made these adorable bunny pillows for my Easter living room decor. And yes they too were made from a table runner!! (Hmm..I’m sensing a theme here….)
This table runner was smaller yet I still got 2 pillows and a small table runner for my coffee table from it. And look at how detailed the design is!! Cute!! Best of all the cost…only $12.99 for the table runner! Can’t beat that!!!
The size of this design was much larger than the design on my pillows this year. Therefore I was able to make this pillow larger…about 18″.
So if you are looking for a budget friendly way to add some seasonal decor to your home consider making pillows from a table runner!! Here’s how.
How To Make Pillows From a Table Runner
First, select a table runner with a design of your choice that has a backing fabric. This will allow you to stuff the pillow “pocket” with fiberfill.
Next, determine the size of pillow you want to make.
Keep in mind how the size and placement of the design will look on your pillow. For this bunny pillow the design was at the bottom. So I made the pillow smaller to keep the design in proportion to the overall pillow. I determined that about 14″ would look best for this pillow.
Once you determine the height of the pillow add 1/2″ to that measurement and cut. Now you have a pillow with three edges already sewn. Easy so far, right?
Fold the edge over about 1/2″ and press. This creates a neater, stronger edge for sewing.
Turn pillow inside out and pin. Then mark off a 3″ opening in the middle of the pillow along the top edge.
Sew from each edge to the center opening. Be sure to back stitch. Turn pillow right side out.
Then stuff the pillow with fiberfill. Hand stitch the opening closed. And your pillow is done!
So the next time you are browsing the home decor store be sure to take a look at the table runners and all of the pretty designs. What kind of pillow can you envision in your home?
