Here’s a quick and easy project to celebrate the Thanksgiving season… a thankful fingerprint tree. We had such fun with this project and wanted to share it with you. Download the free tree template and you too can create a thankful fingerprint tree.
Supplies are simple… white cardstock paper and some washable tempera paint. And a printer of course.
First download and print the free tree template onto white cardstock paper.

Next, select paint colors for the leaves. We used red, yellow, orange, brown and green. I like to use a peanut butter jar lid to put paint in…easier for little ones to handle and helps keep paint contained.
Then dip finger into paint and press on the tree. Add as many leaves as you like.
I do recommend that you let kids “practice” making fingerprints on paper BEFORE putting fingerprints on the tree template. It gives them a chance to experiment with the process. To see how much paint and pressure is needed to create a good fingerprint.
An alternative method for younger children is to apply paint to their index finger with a small paintbrush and then have them press finger on the tree template.
What to do with your beautiful thankful fingerprint tree? Here are a few ideas…
- Frame it and display as part of your fall decor.
- Use as a centerpiece item on your Thanksgiving table or buffet table.
- Create a card to share with loved ones…great for grandparents!
- Make this as a project on Thanksgiving day with your guests. Have everyone sign it , date it and you have a lovely memory of your time together.
This is such a fun project to do. But more importantly it provides an opportunity for us to talk to our children (and grandchildren) about recognizing and giving thanks for what we already have. And reminds us too, that we are blessed in so many ways.
Enjoy!!
