Are you looking for an easy to do project to add some pizzaz to your walls? I was too!! This DIY ceiling medallion wall art project fit the bill!!
This project was inspired by a Pinterest pin from a while back. When I first saw the pin in my feed I fell in love with it. I just loved the uniqueness of this idea to add some pizazz to your walls. Something different for wall decor. And so easy to customize to your exact decor colors.
I quickly pinned it to my new house board…for some day. And forgot about it. But here we are. My someday has finally arrived.
This little corner of my craft room needed a little something. I didn’t want all of my decor to feel too “crafty”. Or feel too cluttered. Then one day as I was sitting at my new craft table sketching and dreaming I had a light-bulb moment!!!
I took greater notice of the pattern in my curtains…one of my favorites…a suzanni pattern. And I immediately thought of the ceiling medallion wall art pin. Ahhh! That’s it! And this project was on!!
These curtains were also the inspiration for the colors I chose for my craft room …teal, green, aqua and white! And the colors I planned to paint the ceiling medallions.
My local Lowes and Home Depot only carried large ceiling medallions…much larger than the space I had. And they were kinda plain too. Definitely NOT what I had in mind.
However, I found some smaller sizes online at Home Depot that had beautiful details! And much less than I thought I would have to pay. The medallion sizes are 7 5/8″ for the small, 11 7/8″ for the medium and 13 7/8″ for the large. Total cost with tax was about $35 for all 3.
I was skeptical about ordering them online. Not sure what they were made of or how heavy they would be. But, I ordered them for delivery to the store (free pickup) and I was extremely impressed with how they came wrapped carefully with lots of packing material.
And they are beautiful!!! And so detailed!! Very lightweight. Not “plastic-y” at all…more foam like I guess. But sturdy.
As for paint color choices I knew I wanted to use the same aqua color as my craft table…Sherwin Williams Reflecting Pool. I just LOVE that color. I also wanted a light lime green, and a darker teal. The same colors in the fabric banner I sewed for my craft room.
I had to custom mix the colors to get the exact shade I wanted. The teal paint was far too bright. Mix it with a little black and then a little white and just the right shade.
I first tried to apply the paint with a foam brush but I found using a paint brush helped me get into al the nooks and crannies much better. I gave each medallion 2 coats and then touched up any little spots I missed.
And here they are!! My beautiful DIY ceiling medallions!!
A close up look of the gorgeous patterns.
My initial plan for attaching the medallions to the wall was to use Command strips…the picture hanging type. They would easily fit on the back side of the medallions. And I already had some.
However, my hubby suggested we try using a nail since these were small and lightweight. (I think he’s a little worried about me using command strips since I incorrectly attempted to remove some once…a loooong time ago…and really damaged a wall…a rookie mistake). He was able to tap a nail into the back of the medallion and easily carve out a little space for the nail to rest on.
So that’s how we hung them…with a single nail. But keep in mind if you use larger medallions, Command picture hanging strips might be the way to go.
I really LOVE them!! These DIY ceiling medallions were the right choice for my wall space! And they were fun to do!!
