Here’s a perfect art project for all those “Frozen” fans out there!!

Do you have a big Frozen fan that lives in your house? Then I have the perfect craft project for you…”Frozen” ice cube painting.

This is such a fun project to do!! However note that it does require some advance preparation. Just mix the frozen ice cube paints the day before you want to do this project.
Supplies needed For Frozen Ice cube Painting

- ice cube trays
- Popsicle sticks, (I prefer the larger size…easier for little hands to control)
- blue, white, purple washable tempera paint
- aluminum foil
- blue and/or white construction paper
- glitter glue
- snowflake stickers
- vinyl tablecloth to protect your table surface
- paper towels to clean up little messes
How to make frozen ice cubes for painting
I chose to use washable tempera paint rather than food coloring to make the colored ice cubes. Food coloring tends to stain and the washable tempera paint doesn’t.
First, mix up your paint colors. I added some white paint to the blue and purple paints to create various shades. I like to use peanut butter jar lids for this.

Then add a little bit of water to your paint mixtures and stir thoroughly. This helps dilute the paint so it moves easier across the paper.
Next, scoop the paint into the ice cube tray compartments filling them about 2/3 full. You need to leave some room for the paint to expand.
Cover the ice cube tray with aluminum foil. Make a small slit above each compartment and place a popsicle stick in it. This helps keep the popsicle stick upright while it freezes. The popsicle stick helps little hands to easily paint with the frozen ice cubes.

Now Let’s Paint !!
Carefully tear the aluminum foil off the ice cube tray. Let it sit for a minute or two to begin to melt slightly. Gently twist the tray to loosen the ice cubes. And then let the frozen ice cube painting begin!!

Get Creative
Let the paint dry. When dry add some glitter and sparkle to the “frozen snow” using glitter glue. It is SOOOO much easier than using regular glitter. Preschoolers and regular glitter DON’T mix well…lol. It makes a HUGE mess!!

I simply squeezed some glitter glue on the paper and let the grandkids smear it about with the flat side of the popsicle stick.

Next we added snowflakes. I found these 3D snowflake stickers at the Dollar Tree. A pack of 36 for only a dollar. Great deal!!

They had a little tiny round paper backing on the back that the grandkids had to peel off to stick onto their painting…great fine motor skill practice!! But you could also use other types of stickers as well.
And they look so beautiful!!!!

Frozen ice cube painting is a great way to spend a wintry afternoon. Give it a try!
